Perch stair lifts, also known as standing stair lifts, are designed for users who have trouble bending at the knees or who generally have trouble sitting. Perch lifts are not as popular as stair lifts, so fewer companies provide perch stair lift models.  The following companies offer perch lifts: Meditek, Minivator, and Acorn.

Some models are chair hybrids. The seat either folds up to allow standing, or the seat is not as deep to allow the user the option of sitting.

Overall perch lifts are great alternatives to stair chair lifts for those in need of a standing option, although they lack some of the safety features. Perch lifts typically do not have lap belts. There is not much to stop the user from falling forward. Perch lifts may not be the best option for users who have trouble supporting themselves.

Try before you buy. Make sure a perch lift fits your needs before committing to a purchase.  Look for a stair lift showroom in your area that offers perch lifts.

Stair lifts requiring batteries power are more commonly found and sold than electric stair lifts.  There are many advantages to the battery powered stair lift such as; they use less energy to recharge the batteries, where with the electric unit you would need a specific outlet to charge the lift.

Batteries run separately from your house so that during a power outage they will continue to run.  The lifts powered by batteries tend to run more smoothly when they speed up or slow down; they also tend to be more quite than electric units.  With the lower voltage (24V) they are less susceptible to damage from a spilled beverage.

Although the battery powered lifts are more common and effective keep in mind there are a few drawbacks; the batteries will need to be replaced every few years depending on your use; also the batteries will need to be recharged.

Generally most tracks have the battery charging system installed and automatically recharge the batteries. Some of the more common manufactures such as Stannah, Sterling and TK Access have made stair lifts that charge regardless of where the chair is on the track.   Some lifts will require the chair to be at a specific point on the track to charge the lift. Make sure to select a lift with the charging option that is most suitable to you.

Ebay is a great tool to use when buying a used stairlift; keep in mind a few simple things. One measure your distance if you have a short distance you may want a ramp. To far of an expanse and you should consider an elevator.

The two types of stairlifts are Straight rail and a curved rail this is pretty straight forward. Straight rail units are for linear distances you will need one that fits from the top step to the bottom give or take 4”. Curved Rails these generally are not easy to retrofit, be careful when buying a used unit.

These both run on two different motors, determine if you want a stair lift with or without a motherboard. Motherboards are a bit nicer and quieter;be aware that this will eventually wear out and need to be replaced at an additional cost. If you do not have a motherboard; the system will run on a drum and cable drive system this is just as efficient as a motherboard system. The later system tends to be a bit bulkier in design and somewhat louder.

While shopping for your system on ebay make sure to ask dimensions, weight limit and type of motor.  Also be sure to ask whether this system comes with a warrantee and guarantee. When considering pricing take into account the shipping cost; this is and area where price gauging can occur. Just like all internet purchases, research before you buy.

Purchasing a new stair lift can be a confusing matter, purchasing a used stairlift on craigslist can be even more confusing.

1. Determine the type of stairlift you need, straight or curved
2. Measure your stairway
3. Search craigslist for stair lift or stairlift. Stairlifts can be listed in many different categories, you should search all of the categories to find every listing.
4. Look for stair lifts that are still assembled and functional. It is easy to test an assembled stair lift and next to impossible to test a disassembled stair lift. You can purchase a disassembled stair lift but make sure to account for all of the pieces and parts.
5. Find out when the battery was replaced, if it has one. The battery may need to be replaced if the stairlift has not been plugged in or if the battery is older than 1 year.
6. Find out how much use the stair has. Was it used daily for 2 years or occasionally once a month for 1 year? You can purchase a heavily used stair lift, but you may be better of with a lightly used stair lift.
7. Is it still under warranty? Is the warranty transferable?

There are usually pretty good deals to be found on craigslist, just make sure you understand what you are getting into.

What is covered by the warranty?

Make sure you understand what is covered by the warranty, and how long the warranty lasts. If you are looking at a model with batteries, make sure you inquire about the warranty on the replacement of the batteries.

How long does it take to get service?

A warranty is important, but it is also important to know how long it takes to get an item repaired under the warranty. A stair lift typically  becomes a critical tool in your home, it may not be acceptible to have it down for a week waiting on repairs. Make sure that any promises a sales person makes are in writing, most sales people will tell you anything you want to hear.

What needs to be regularly serviced?

There may be some items that require regular service to keep the warranty valid. Tracks may need to be greased or batteries may need to be replaced. Just like a car you need to understand required maintenance and what needs to be done by trained service professionals.

Will an outlet need to be installed?

You will need an adequate power source near the stair lift. In most newer homes this is usually not a problem. Older homes may need a new outlet installed. It is also important to verify that the outlet provides the correct voltage for the stair lift.

How long will it take to be installed?

Some stairways require curved stair lifts, stair lifts with custom built rails/tracks. It may take a week or more to build custom rails. Straight stair lifts are easier to install and can usually be installed within days or within a week.

Stair lifts are expensive, they can run $1500-$6000 with installation costs. Fortunately there are alternatives for those who only need a stair lift for temporary reasons (IE: post surgery, short term care for a relative, etc).

Most rental companies will only offer stair lifts for straight stair cases. You will need to buy a stair lift if you require a curved stair lift.

Prices depend on the dealer and the duration of your use. Expect to pay installation and removal charges on top of the monthly rate.

Be prepared before calling for quotes. Measure the distance of your stairway and measure the distance in feet to the nearest outlet from your stair case.

Most local stair lift dealers offer stair lift rentals. Not all of them advertise the service, since they would rather sell you stair lift. Call around to find out if any of your local dealers offer rentals.

Rack and pinion stair lifts have many components, which often leads to more maintenance. While many high quality lifts are designed with this type of gear drive, you will need regular service and maintenance to keep the gears lubricated as well as adjustments to the gear teeth. This will cost you additional money in order to keep the lift in good working order.

Cable Drive chair lifting equipment

Cable lifts are designed so that the cable does not move out of place, never needs lubrication, and does not rub against itself.  This results in a safe, quiet, and maintenance free drive train. The cable is often made of steel, and can support large amounts of weight.  The stop mechanism is not as smooth as a rack and pinion lift, but can support more weight.

Stair lifts become tools that their owners depend on every day. The last thing you want is a stair lift that breaks often, or one that renders its operator stranded.  The need for a cheap stair lift usually comes from either the temporary need for a stair lift or a limited budget.

Temporary Stair Lifts

Local dealers usually either offer used stair lifts or stair lift rentals. Make a call to local stair lift dealers or medical supply companies to inquire about stair lift rentals. Over the long term it is typically more expensive to rent a stair lift. You may be better off purchasing a stair lift if you are going to need it for more than 2 months.  Stair lift rentals, as with used stair lifts, are usually only an option if your stairway does not require a curved rail.

Stair Lift on a Budget

If you are on a budget then you are probably going to need to look for a used stair lift.

Used stair lifts are an option if you understand the following:

1. You should only buy a used stair lift if your stairway does not require a curved rail.  Used curved stair lifts are not a good option as the rails were custom built for the previous owner.

3. Battery powered used stair lifts may require new batteries, especially if the stair lift has been disconnected from power for an extended period of time.

4. Where to look for a used stair lift whilst not being penny smart and pound foolish? There are always stair lifts being sold on Ebay and Craigslist, but these may not be the best source for cheap stair lifts. Your best bet on used stair lifts is probably local dealers, call around to find out what they have available. Stair lift dealers are the best choice for a number of reasons: They understand the equipment, they can install the stair lift, they can service the stair lift, and they will probably buy back the stair lift when you are done with it. Caveat emptor to those buying chair lifts off of Ebay or Craigslist.

Medicare does not consider stair lifts a medical necessity, nor does it cover the costs of permanent equipment. One could argue that stair lifts are a safety precaution that could potentially save money on medical costs, unfortunately Medicare does not agree. Medicare considers stair lifts a convenience.
